Mandatory Caste Diversity Reporting necessary to combat rampant caste discrimination in workplaces

The proposal for Indian corporates to produce a  Diversity Matrix report  aims to combat rampant caste discrimination in workplaces. Advocates argue that mandatory reporting would encourage organizations to prioritize diversity hiring, similar to existing gender disclosures  Companies should implement explicit anti-caste policies and create accessible reporting mechanisms for discrimination. Additionally, fostering awareness and education about caste dynamics is essential for cultivating an inclusive culture .  Current efforts often overlook caste, focusing more on gender and LGBTQ+ issues, highlighting the need for a comprehensive approach to diversity in India. Current diversity reporting initiatives in India show mixed effectiveness. While 54% of employers express optimism about their diversity efforts, significant challenges remain. Notably, sectors like IT and BFSI are leading in diversity hiring, with a 33% annual increase noted .  However, many organizati...

Savarna groups dominate commerce and industry in India

Savarna groups dominate commerce and industry in India, significantly marginalizing OBC, SC, and ST communities. Data shows that SCs and STs own only 11.4% and 5.4% of non-agricultural enterprises, respectively, despite their larger population share This underrepresentation is compounded by systemic barriers such as limited access to education and capital, which perpetuate economic disparities  Savarna cultural hegemony further obscures caste-based inequalities by framing success as merit-based, ignoring the advantages accrued through caste privilege  Thus, OBC, SC, and ST groups remain largely excluded from meaningful participation in the economic landscape. The dominance of Savarnas has profoundly shaped India's economic landscape by perpetuating caste-based inequalities. Savarnas control significant resources, leading to  inequitable access to finance  for lower castes, which stifles their entrepreneurial potential and contributes to  resource misallocation ...

Raise of RSS-affiliated think tanks

Since 2014, the number of think tanks affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has significantly increased. India had 192 think tanks in 2014, which surged to 612 by 2021, reflecting a notable rise in nationalist-oriented institutions like the India Foundation and the Vivekananda International Foundation  This growth is part of a broader strategy to challenge leftist intellectual dominance and promote a "New India" ideology through policy research and public discourse. The main goals of RSS-affiliated think tanks include: Promoting Hindutva Ideology : They aim to spread the ideology of Hindutva to strengthen the Hindu community and uphold Indian culture and civilizational values Challenging Leftist Dominance : These think tanks seek to counter the intellectual hegemony of leftist ideologies in India, providing an alternative narrative in policy discourse Supporting Government Policies : They produce research and reports that s...

BJP appears to have a stronger focus on the welfare of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) compared to the Congress

The BJP appears to have a stronger focus on the welfare of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) compared to the Congress. Currently, 27% of BJP candidates are from OBC backgrounds, slightly higher than Congress's 24.8% .  The BJP has also appointed more OBC chief ministers (30.9%) compared to Congress (17.2%) and has a larger number of OBC ministers in the Union Council .  However, Congress has historically implemented significant policies for OBCs, such as the OBC quota in education, but struggles to claim credit for these initiatives Historically, the approaches of the BJP and Congress toward OBC representation have differed significantly: BJP's Strategy : The BJP has actively promoted OBC leaders within its ranks, resulting in a higher number of OBC chief ministers and ministers. The party's rise coincided with a period of increased OBC political assertion, effectively capitalizing on this demographic to enhance its electoral base The BJP has also framed its leadership, like N...

ANALYSIS: "Other Backward Classes" (OBC) is not explicitly defined in the Indian Constitution

The term "Other Backward Classes" (OBC) is not explicitly defined in the Indian Constitution, leading to ambiguity. Various articles, such as Articles 15 and 16, refer to different classifications like "socially and educationally backward classes" without a unified definition The National Commission for Backward Classes Act, 1993, provides some clarity by allowing the central government to specify OBCs in official lists, but the lack of a clear constitutional definition remains a challenge for consistent application. This complexity has resulted in various judicial interpretations and administrative practices over time Supreme Court judgments have significantly shaped the definition and recognition of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in India. The landmark  Indira Sawhney case (1992)  established that OBC reservations aim to rectify historical discrimination, asserting that no group can be deemed backward solely based on religion or other identities More recently, the ...

Not counting caste in the census does not reduce casteism

Not counting caste in the census does not inherently reduce casteism. Critics argue that avoiding caste enumeration may deepen social divisions and hinder efforts to address inequalities, as caste-based discrimination remains prevalent in India Not counting caste in the census significantly impacts social justice efforts by obscuring the socio-economic realitie s of marginalized communities. Without accurate data, policymakers struggle to implement targeted affirmative action and equitable resource. Distribution, perpetuating existing inequalities The lack of caste data hinders the monitoring of affirmative action policies, making it difficult to assess their effectiveness. Furthermore, it limits understanding of intra-caste disparities, which are crucial for formulating inclusive development strategies that align with constitutional mandates for equality. The debate highlights that both counting and not counting caste are political acts, with significant implications for social dynam...

Should Bahujan Groups start focusing on National Security and International relations too?

The focus of Bahujan groups, intellectuals, and think tanks has traditionally been on social justice, caste-based discrimination, and the upliftment of marginalized communities. This focus stems from the historical and ongoing struggles faced by these communities in India. Here are some reasons why they might not prioritize national security and international relations: Historical Context : Bahujan groups have emerged from a history of social and economic oppression. Their primary mission has been to address issues of social justice, equality, and representation for marginalized communities. Resource Allocation : These groups often operate with limited resources and funding. They prioritize issues that directly impact their core constituencies, such as education, employment, and social welfare. Expertise and Focus : The expertise within Bahujan groups and think tanks is often centered around social sciences, human rights, and social justice. National security and international relation...

Tatya Tope's descendants run grocery shop, Udham Singh's reduced to daily wage labourers

IANS | Updated: Aug 15, 2020, 10:24 IST Tatya Tope's descendants run grocery shop, Udham Singh's reduced to daily wage labourers Even as the nation celebrates its 74th  Independence Day  on Saturday, the descendants of the forgotten heroes of the freedom movement continue to live in pathetic conditions. Some of the descendants of our martyrs are reduced to performing menial jobs for paltry wages, while a few are virtually begging on the streets. Jeet Singh, the great grand nephew of martyr  Udham Singh , was spotted near a construction site in Punjab's Sangrur district. Jeet Singh has been serving as a daily wage labourer. Udham Singh went to London in 1940 and assassinated Michael O'Dwyer, the then Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, to avenge the massacre of Jallianwala Bagh. MODI GOVERNMENT: CREATING A FALSE NARRATIVE

The Modi government obviously thinks it’s easier to change the narrative than the reality. Whatever the narrative of being the world’s third largest economy (PPP), the reality that gnaws at Modi’s bones is India’s ranks ng in the Global Hunger Index. “While bristling at the ratings, what the minister didn’t reveal was that her ministry had over the past year made multiple attempts at lobbying with the publishers of the Global Hunger Index to bump up India’s ranking. Then union minister Smriti Irani wrote to NITI Aayog in February 2020, asking the think tank to “rectify” “issues” in the index. The government wanted the publishers to make critical changes to how they score the countries. One of them was to focus less on malnutrition among children, an indicator where India performed poorly – even by the government's own admission – and dragged down its overall score. The government thought the hunger index was too “biased” towards children and even argued that a large number of inf...
