The 24 spokes of the Ashoka Chakra represent the 12 links of Dependent Origination (Paṭiccasamuppāda) taught by the Buddha, both in the forward and reverse order.
12 Spokes Representing the 12 Stages of Suffering (Forward Order):
- Ignorance (Avidyā): Lack of understanding of reality and its true nature.
- Formations (Saṃskāra): Mental formations (karma) arising from ignorance.
- Consciousness (Vijñāna): The arising of consciousness based on these formations.
- Name and Form (Nāmarūpa): The physical and mental aspects of existence that arise from consciousness.
- Six Senses (Ṣaḍāyatana): The six senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, mind) and their respective objects.
- Contact (Sparśa): The interaction between the senses and their objects.
- Feeling (Vedanā): The experience of pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral sensations arising from contact.
- Craving (Tṛṣṇā): Desire for continued existence or pleasure, leading to attachment and aversion.
- Clinging (Upādāna): Grasping onto existence, resisting change, and clinging to desires.
- Becoming (Bhava): Continuing the cycle of existence through karma generated by clinging.
- Birth (Jāti): Rebirth in a new form, conditioned by past karma.
- Aging and Death (Jarāmaraṇa): The inevitable process of aging and death, a consequence of the cycle of birth and rebirth.
12 Spokes Representing the Cessation of Suffering (Reverse Order):
- Cessation of Aging and Death (Jarāmaraṇa): Overcoming the limitations of aging and death through liberation.
- Cessation of Birth (Jāti): Attaining liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
- Cessation of Becoming (Bhava): Ending the cycle of becoming by eliminating karma.
- Cessation of Clinging (Upādāna): Letting go of attachments and grasping, freeing oneself from desires.
- Cessation of Craving (Tṛṣṇā): Eliminating all cravings and desires.
- Cessation of Feeling (Vedanā): Transcending the experience of pleasure, pain, and neutrality.
- Cessation of Contact (Sparśa): Ending the interaction between senses and their objects.
- Cessation of Six Senses (Ṣaḍāyatana): Freeing oneself from the limitations of sensory experience.
- Cessation of Name and Form (Nāmarūpa): Transcending the limitations of physical and mental existence.
- Cessation of Consciousness (Vijñāna): Ceasing the cycle of conditioned consciousness.
- Cessation of Formations (Saṃskāra): Eliminating the mental formations that arise from ignorance.
- Cessation of Ignorance (Avidyā): Cultivating wisdom and understanding the true nature of reality, leading to the cessation of ignorance.
The Ashoka Chakra, with its 24 spokes, thus symbolizes the interconnectedness of all things, the cycle of suffering and its cessation, and the path to liberation through understanding and breaking free from the cycle of cause and effect. It serves as a reminder of the importance of mindfulness, compassion, and ethical living.
