POLICING FOR HAFTA

I take this route almost every other day. It’s a scenic bit between Turkapalli and Vantimamidi on the Secunderabad to Karimnagar highway known as the Rajiv Rahadaari. This avenue of about two kilometres cuts through a small stretch of forest and travellers like to stop by for stretching their legs and enjoying themselves on the fruit and vegetables sold by the ladies of nearby villages. Charcoal grilled corn and seasonal fruits like guavas, custard apples, ber, dragon fruit and sweet lime provide a welcome break. But for the past few days the police have taken to calling and threatening the women to move on or else. Obviously a hafta is implied. Telangana has just got a new DGP who comes with a high reputation for integrity and firmness. I hope he takes notice and sends the word down the line?
